The Immortals

Interlude: the truth in five words

Her book ended mid-paragraph.

All living creatures must die.

Of course, Mokou died quite frequently. Not as often now that she was staying put and eating regularly, but in her darkest hours she had expected to feel the sting of the proverbial reaper's scythe at least once a week.

All living creatures must die. And then what?

There were beings who existed and did not live. Such beings were essentially the only ones left in the world. Did they sense the passage of time the same way Mokou did? The answers she had received had been cryptic and dismissive. She supposed not.

Mokou was a living creature. Kaguya was one, too. Eirin... Mokou had had her doubts, but whatever Eirin had once been, she too had consumed the Hourai Elixir and was thus a living creature. Three left. And Mokou was the only who had been born mortal.

All living creatures must die. And then move on.

The Hourai Elixir hadn't destroyed Mokou's ingrained need to turn to dust. It had only destroyed her ability to do so.

Over long periods of time, it was possible to get used to absolutely anything. Freed from the limits of human endurance and lifespan, Mokou could overcome any and all challenges she faced.

She was yet to get used to the screams of every fibre of her being begging to disintegrate.
